The lake Trasimeno is the third lake in Italy and even is not so known as Lake Como or Garda lake, this is a quite, perfect location in the center of Italy where you can spend your holidays to visit so many interesting places! Florence is only 1h and 15min. far and easy reachable by train. There is Cortona about 20min from lake area, that is a rural ancient village in a traditional medieval style. Cortona is known for the film location of ‘Under the Tuscan sun’ , a romantic story with Diane Lane and Raul Bova settled in this amazing little village that seams an open sky theatre.
From the Lake area you can also reach lots of little interesting spots like Passignano sul Trasimeno that has its own history with the Hannibal battle. This is the best village where to have really good walks on the lake cost enjoying a wonderful aperitif or amazing ice creams.
Here you can find restaurants on lake and also a place where to rent Bikes to do the tour around the lake into nature. From Passignano depart ferries that could carry you to the Isola Maggiore, where you can enjoy a rural place with really ancient Italian style constructions in a traditional fisher village. At the island you can enjoy a great lunch on the river, choosing one of the interesting restaurants on lake like L’Oso or Da Sauro Restaurants.
From Trasimeno lake area you can also reach little villages around the lake like Tuoro, Borghetto, San Feliciano, Castiglione del lago, Monte del lago and I really suggest you to stop for an aperitif at Puntabella in Tuoro area, where you can enjoy an incredible view on lake at the sunset! If you are a nature lover I also suggest a visit to the Natural park of L’Oasi La Valle, where walking on a long platform on the water, you can immerse yourself into Nature, between different species of birds.
From the Trasimeno lake you can also reach lots of beautiful medieval towns in Umbria like Assisi, Spello, Spoleto, Montefalco, Foligno, Bevagna, Perugia and Gubbio. Each one of those interesting little towns has its own unique history and traditions. During the summer season you can meet really nice events like: The Spoleto international Festival (Festival dei 2 Mondi), usually organised 10 days in July with artists coming from all over the world playing Classical Music in front of the Duomo in Spoleto centre or having an international dance show at the Roman ‘Anfiteatro’, with an incredible spot under the stars. Another important event is in Perugia at July with Umbria Jazz festival, or in Bevagna at June with ‘Mercato delle Gaite’ an ancient traditional fest where all the village will be settled in the medieval period, with medieval costumes, ancient history and workers, ancient taverns and good food. Another interesting event is in August where day by day will be organised several traditional events in Montefalco town.
Then from the Trasimeno lake you can also reach lots of beautiful medieval towns in Tuscany like as I already said Cortona, then Arezzo, Montepulciano and all the villages under the Monte Amiata area like Pienza, Bagno Vignoni, Montalcino and all the Val d’Orcia amazing villages and Thermal baths in San Filippo terme. Then you can also easy reach Siena and Pisa from the lake area.
